Letters Against Isolation

Between frigid bouts of snowy weather, shockingly expensive groceries, and outrageous news alerts always at the tip of our fingers, any one of us can sometimes feel as if we are very much alone and teetering on the edge of the abyss.

But it needn’t be such a lonely, scary time, especially for older people who might feel forgotten and alone. There are all kinds of simple things we can do to connect with others. We can bring hope and companionship and even humor into someone else’s life with little more than a piece of paper, a pen and a stamp.

Just by writing one upbeat, friendly, easy going letter to one person, each of us can make a huge difference in a stranger’s life.

Letters Against Isolation began in 2020 during the start of the pandemic. Two young women recognized the negative impact a lack of human connection was having on their grandparents in particular, and older people as a whole. These two women began sending handwritten letters to a small group of senior citizens, but the demand for these written hugs soon grew by leaps and bounds. Today, Letters Against Isolation touches the lives of older people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia!

As you’ve probably guessed, by taking one step toward making the world a little kinder, when any of us shares a bit of light with another person, the cold is less brittle, the groceries are still as pricey, and the news can be turned off for a minute or two. And in the quiet, we know that we’ve contributed something positive. And that matters a lot.
