Sparkling Shamrock Window Ornaments

This is an easy, affordable and family-fun way to make sparkling shamrocks to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th.

You’ll need:

 Toothpick or straw

 Waxed paper

 Rolling pin or heavy can

 Shamrock cookie cutters, or sharp knife

 Thread, yarn, string, cord, etc.

 1 cup granulated sugar

 3 tablespoons white glue

 1 tablespoon glitter

 1 teaspoon water

Green food coloring

In a medium bowl, stir the sugar, glue, glitter and water until smooth. Add drops of food coloring until almost reaching your desired tint. The food coloring will darken over time, so add a little less than you might think is necessary . Place a ball of the glue-dough on a piece of waxed paper, then using your hands, push the dough into an approximate square. Cover with another piece of waxed paper before gently rolling the dough to ~1/4-inch between both sheets of waxed paper.

When flattened to desired thickness, set aside top sheet of waxed paper before cutting into shamrocks (or any other shapes) using cookie cutters or a sharp knife (adult supervision for children is required for this option, obviously!).

Gather the scraps of dough into a ball and re-roll as needed.

When all of the dough has been used, make a hole in the top center of each ornament by poking and twirling a round toothpick or plastic straw.

Allow ornaments to dry at least 24 hours per side before attaching thread, cord, etc. and hanging up. Enjoy, but do NOT eat! These are for decoration only.
